Why it exists

Finance people learn the theory. Almost nobody gets to practise the calls.

You can read about WACC, covenants and working capital for years and still never feel what it is like to choose — with a credit rating on the line and a board waiting. The CFO Game is a flight simulator for those moments: real trade-offs, a fictional company, and immediate, honest feedback.

  • Decide, don't just readEvery choice moves economic value added (EVA) live. You see the consequence, not a textbook answer.
  • Learn from the verdictA grade A–F, your rank among a simulated field of CFOs, and a plain-English report after every quarter.
  • Fits a coffee breakAbout five minutes per decision. Fifteen decisions to cover the ground a CFO actually walks.
How it works

Three steps. One quarter. A verdict you will remember.

Each decision drops you into a fictional company's situation, lets you make the call through a visual mini-game, and then puts you in front of the board.

  1. 01

    Read the situation

A briefing on the company, the market and the numbers that matter — trapped cash, a maturing loan, a tempting acquisition.

The CFO Game dashboard showing the company's EVA, cash and rating
  2. 02

Make the call — EVA moves live

Slide, route, slice or dial the decision. Economic value added reacts as you move, so you feel the trade-off before you commit.

Cash River mini-game: adjusting receivables, payables and inventory while EVA updates
  3. 03

    Face the board

Quarter close: a grade A–F, your standing in a simulated field of CFOs, a one-line Board Chair verdict and a learning report you can export as PDF.

Quarter-close reveal with grade, EVA change and Board Chair verdict
After every quarter

A learning report in plain English — not a score you forget by lunch.

Each report explains what the right call was, why, and the one concept you should carry into Monday's meeting. Reports collect in your library and export to PDF. Your career rank climbs from Junior CFO to Elite Global CFO as your decisions improve.

The Weekly CFO Cup

Same company. Same shocks. Everyone in the world, every Monday.

Each week a new free three-decision Cup opens. Every player faces the identical company and the identical market surprises that week — so your score is a fair comparison with anyone, anywhere.

  • New Cup every MondayThree decisions, about fifteen minutes, free. A fresh company and fresh shocks each week.
  • Share your result cardOne tap shares a picture of your result for chats and LinkedIn; it cannot be edited. A full Pro run or a team game also earns a PDF Performance Certificate with an "Add to LinkedIn" button.
  • Keep a weekly streakPlay every week and your streak grows. Miss one and it resets — the gentle pressure that builds a habit.

15 decisions · 6 mini-games

The decisions a real CFO is paid to get right.

Every decision is a hands-on mini-game, not a multiple-choice quiz. Each one is built around a concept that shows up in actual board packs.

  • Cash River

Open and close the gates of receivables, payables and inventory. Watch trapped cash flow back into the business.

  • Balance Tower

Stack debt and equity without toppling the credit rating. Feel where leverage stops being cheap.

  • Value City

Fund the projects that beat your cost of capital. Return the rest to shareholders — and explain why.

  • Route Runner

Choose suppliers, routes and hedges. Landed cost and FX exposure decide whether the margin survives the trip.

  • Budget Slicer

Rebuild the budget from zero. Every slice has to earn its place against the drivers that actually move revenue.

  • Board Dials

Set the forecast, the covenants and the message. Credibility with the board is a number too — and it compounds.

What the fifteen decisions cover

  • Capital allocation vs WACC
  • Inventory & supplier terms

  • Landed cost & FX hedging
  • Zero-based budgeting
  • AI & automation ROI
  • Technical debt
  • Driver-based forecasting

Sample Performance Certificate: name, grade, EVA, standing, career rank, date, certificate ID and verification link
Performance Certificate · Pro

Proof you sat in the chair — and how you did.

Finish a Pro run, or a Team Pass game, and the game issues a named PDF certificate. One tap adds it to your LinkedIn profile; anyone can check its details against the certificate ID.

  • Your name, final grade, EVA, standing in the field, career rank and date
  • Unique certificate ID with a public verification page
  • "Add to LinkedIn" pre-fills the certification entry for you

Plainly: this is a performance certificate from a simulation. It records how you played a fictional company. It is not an accredited qualification and does not claim to be one.

Teams, classrooms & organisations

Put the whole team in the same chair. No app needed.

One organiser designs the game and buys a Team Pass in the iPhone app — SAR 20 per player. Everyone else plays in their browser, on a laptop, Android or iPhone, with no app and no account. The organiser follows everyone live on a dashboard, and every player who finishes gets a Performance Certificate.

FAQ

Questions people ask before they sit down.

Is it real finance, or just a game?
Both. The company, its market and its shocks are fictional and illustrative, but the mechanics are the ones CFOs actually reason with: working capital, WACC, leverage and ratings, covenants, hedging, zero-based budgets and driver-based forecasts. Every decision moves economic value added (EVA), and every report explains the concept in plain English. It is a practice ground, not financial advice.
Do I need a finance degree?
No. The first decisions assume you know roughly what cash, debt and profit are. Each mini-game shows the consequence of your move as you make it, and the learning report after each quarter teaches the concept you just used. Analysts, controllers, founders and MBA students all start in the same chair.
Is my data collected?
No account, no sign-in, no tracking and no ads — your progress lives on your device, in the app and in the browser. The one exception is a team game you join: your chosen name, decisions and score are sent to the organiser's dashboard and deleted automatically 90 days after the game ends. See the privacy policy.
Is Pro a subscription?
No. Pro is a single in-app purchase of SAR 49 on iPhone (the App Store shows your local price). You pay once; there is no renewal and nothing to cancel.
What is the Weekly CFO Cup?
Every Monday a new free three-decision Cup opens. Everyone in the world plays the identical company and the identical market shocks that week, so scores are directly comparable. You get a shareable result card (an image) and a weekly streak. It plays in the browser and in the iPhone app.
Can I play on Android or on a laptop?
Yes — in the browser. The browser edition offers this week's Cup and opens any three-decision Cup code, on any device with a modern browser. For the full fifteen-decision game without an iPhone, a Team Pass (SAR 20 per player, bought in the app by one organiser, who designs the game and follows everyone live on a dashboard) gives every player the whole game in their browser.
My colleagues don't have iPhones — can they play?
Yes. The free Weekly Cup and any three-decision Cup code play in the browser on any device. For the full game, the organiser designs the game and buys a Team Pass inside the iPhone app (SAR 20 per player, from SAR 100 for 5 players), then shares one invite link — players type their name and play in their browser, on a laptop, Android or iPhone, with no app and no account, until the end of the following month. The organiser follows everyone live on a dashboard in the app.
Is the Performance Certificate accredited?
No. It is a performance certificate from a simulation: it records your grade, EVA, standing and career rank in a fictional company, with a verify code you can check. It cannot be edited. It is not an accredited qualification, and we say so on the certificate itself.
How do organisations buy?
For a team of up to 50, the organiser designs the game and buys a Team Pass inside the iPhone app today — SAR 20 per player, in packs of 5, 10, 25 or 50 — and shares one invite link, then follows everyone live on a dashboard and downloads a results PDF, image or CSV; App Store prices include tax. For more than 50 people, an invoice, a university course or delivery through a training provider, it is the same SAR 20 per participant, invoiced (excl. VAT), with custom programmes on request — that route is coming soon. Send a request and you will receive a proposal. Training providers who would like to deliver the programme can apply to become a founding partner.
